Three useful arts funders
If you are already aware of these trusts, or they do not meet your requirements and you need assistance finding more, Dawn and Pippa at CAVS can support you to do this. Call 01268 638416 or drop in to The Tyrells Centre (Seamore Avenue, Thundersley) on a Friday morning for an informal chat.
The Arts Council provides a number of grant making programmes, including Grants for the Arts. Grants for the Arts are for arts activities that engage people in England, or that help artists and arts organisations carry out their work. They are for activities carried out over a set period. Grants for the Arts is the most common route of Arts Council funding. For more information on eligibility and to download an application form, go to http://www.artscouncil.org.uk/funding/grants-arts/eligibility/ . You can also use the same website to find out about the Arts Council’s other funding opportunities, such as Sustain (for organisations affected by the recession) and Unlimited (relating to artists with disabilities and commissions for the Olympics). For information on these other funding streams, go to http://www.artscouncil.org.uk/funding/ .
Mediabox is for disadvantaged young people who do not usually get opportunities like this. Mediabox does not have a single, fixed definition of disadvantaged, but expects applicants to have their own strategy for engaging hard to reach young people. Suggested disadvantaged categories are:
· Young people excluded or at risk of exclusion from mainstream education
· Young people not in education, training or employment (NEET)
· Young people with disabilities or mental health issues
· Young parents
· Young carers
· Young homeless
· Young people within the youth justice system
· Young asylum seekers or refugees
· Young people from BME communities
· Looked after young people and care leavers
· Young people from areas defined by the Government's indices of deprivation as economically disadvantaged Wellcome Trust Arts Awards
Grants are for producing a media project, and there are different categories of grant depending on the size and type of the project. For more information about the different grant levels and how to apply, go to : http://www.media-box.co.uk/funding/who-can-apply.
Elephant Trust for The Arts
‘To bear in mind at all times an original, inquisitive, open-minded, generous and unshockable approach to art in all its forms with a bias towards the visual arts.’
This injunction, laid down by the original Trustees of The Elephant Trust remains the cornerstone of the Trust’s policy today. The Trust was set up to make it possible for artists and those presenting their work to undertake and complete projects when frustrated by lack of funds. It is committed to helping artists and institutions that depart from the routine and signal new, distinct and imaginative sets of possibilities.
Given the Trust’s modest resources,
grants have usually been limited to £2,000 but larger grants may be
considered. Priority is now being given to artists in the visual
arts and to small organisations and galleries working with them.
The Trust appreciates well argued, imaginative proposals from
artists or small supporting institutions to make or produce new
work.
